About Our Wood Flooring Company
Owen Cameron was born June 30th, 1917 in Portage, Quebec, Canada. He came to the US at age 12. One of ten children, he came to live with an older brother in the Metro Detroit area. Owen had a paper route and put himself through school at U of D Catholic School. He then bought a truck and delivered coal. He started sanding floors when Irving Raskin asked him if he would be interested in working for him and gave him a job. Owen joined the army and went to war. When he returned he married Mae Fillion and had 6 children. He started Cameron the Sandman in 1936.
The company has had numerous addresses in the Metro Detroit area over the years. Several of those years the company was run out of the family home and Mae took care of the books. It has remained at its current address in Farmington since the late 1970s. In 1974 the company was purchased from Owen by his son, Greg, the current owner.
A third generation now works in the business. Joel was fortunate enough to have worked with his grandfather and father from gyms to private custom work. Joel remembers his very first paycheck from Grandpa Owen was 32 years ago and he made a whopping $7.91. A fourth generation is a possibility, currently Owen’s 3 great-grandsons are growing up in the family business.
